Should I Prune My Container Tomato Plants?

by Anne
(Indianapolis)

Question:

My tomato container plant is growing very tall, but I worry that all of the nutrients are going towards the height rather than to the lower hanging fruit.

Answer:

That's a great question, Anne.

It would be alright to do what you're asking. But at this point in the season, I would probably just prune out all of the suckers and some small stems that are maybe only 4-5 inches long.

As far as stems that are making up the height of the plant, I would leave those as is.

Lastly, make sure you are fertilizing if the soil isn't getting anything. That will help as well. Next time around, I would try to do more of the major pruning early in the season.

Hope this helps,
Brad
