Repetition unifies a grouping such as this one with such a large number of annuals in many bright colors.

By using yellow and purple pansies in several of the containers, continuity is achieved.

A deck surrounded by wooden fencing acts as a stage to just about any and all annuals available to plant in containers.

We see a mixture of annuals that prefer full sun, such as petunias, marigold and alyssum and annuals that prefer less sun: pansies, nasturtium and fuchsia.

Nasturtiums are a fun annual to grow from seed. The seed is quite large and needs to be soaked for a few hours prior to planting. Plant them in compressed peat pellets, about one quarter to a half inch deep. They germinate quickly and are fast growers as well. They aren't picky about soil and they do better if you don't fertilize them much. Both the flowers and the leaves are edible, having a peppery taste that works well in mixed salads.

Sweet alyssum is another easy to grow from seed annual. The seeds are very fine, they need light to germinate, so they just need to be pressed lightly onto the growing medium. They are also very easy-going, not requiring much special care.

When they start getting tired, just give them a shearing and they’ll come back strong. Sweet alyssum has a pleasant honey like scent, more pronounced in the white varieties.
