Make the most of the space in your patio or balcony with a grouping like this one.

A tiered potting bench made of recycled wood holds a large number of containers of annuals and herbs.

Pink nicotiana's smaller varieties, such as "Avalon Pink", are the perfect choice for containers.

It will bloom profusely with star shaped flowers that both hummingbirds and butterflies love. It grows in part to full sun and prefers rich soil and average water. The newer varieties are self-cleaning, so deadheading isn’t necessary.

Iceland poppy (Papaver Nudicaule) is a variety of poppies suitable for growing in containers, as they stay fairly small, compared to most annual and perennial poppies.

It prefers part sun, moist but fast draining soil and it is easily grown from seed. It blooms in spring. Deadheading is necessary to keep the plant from going to seed too early, thus prolonging its bloom period. It is somewhat prone to aphid problems; apply insecticide as needed. Spraying with a jet of water to knock aphids down won’t work, as it can damage the tissue-like thin petals of the flower.

Sitting on the first rung of the potting bench, a group of herbs: curly leaf parsley, creeping thyme and purple basil. Herbs do well in full sun. Plant in good quality potting mix and check for excellent drainage. Fertilize sparingly, as some herbs actually dislike it (like thyme).
