Ivy's dark green leaves act as the perfect background for blue and white pansies.

A basket that will grow well even in late winter, when very few options are available.

Ivy is well known for spreading out of control when planted on the ground.

In a container, it can be kept manageable by pruning it as needed.

Ivy will drape down and give an informal look to a hanging container. Aphids and spider mites can bother ivy. Apply insecticide as needed.

Ivy is easy to propagate by cuttings. Place the cuttings in water until roots begin to form. Ivy’s leaves can get scorched or bleached if placed in full sun.

Pansies are also prone to aphid attacks. A rich potting mix, part sun and regular watering are needed to keep them healthy.

Pansies do not perform well in hot weather, so if a container combination like this one starts to look unkempt as the gardening season progresses, pansies could be replaced with another annual better suited for warmer weather, like heliotrope or ageratum, in the same color family.
