Editor's reply: Thanks for writing with this tip, Emily. Since Spring has finally sprung, it's time to think about this wonderful addition to the container garden.

Marigolds are certainly rewarding flowers to plant, and they pay back your efforts with hugely bright and beautiful displays of blooms.

Planting them in pots means you can easily move them to chase the sun around your yard, as they need a lot of sun exposure to thrive.

You'll need just the right container gardening soil, and ensure that it's thoroughly thawed if you're using a container from last year that has been left outside over winter.

Ideally you would have already started your Marigold seeds by the break of the Spring weather.

If you're starting from plants, then most containers will only bear one Marigold plant of a decent size. You can make wonderful container flower garden displays using a combination of Marigolds and other, less showy, flowers.
