Chives are an easy to grow perennial and a pretty addition to your container garden.

Their pretty lavender flowers appear in early spring and are full of seed that can be used for propagating new plants.

Bees love them, too, making them helpful in garden pollination.

To get the most out of the stems, however, cut the flowers when they bloom to allow nutrients to go to the most useful part of the plant. Fertilize monthly.

In addition to cutting the stems for seasoning, chives are excellent insect repellants.

Sage is one of the most aromatic herbs there is. And like chives, is an easy-to-grow perennial. Sage can grow to fairly large bush, so will require re-potting when it becomes root-bound.

Sage leaves can be used to season pork, chicken and turkey and can be used fresh or dried.

Sage prefers a moist, but well-drained soil and container. Fertilize monthly.
