Nicotiana, flowering tobacco, is a carefree annual ornamental plant grown for its amazing fragrance.

Different varieties grow to different heights, from one foot to four feet.

Choose the shorter varieties when selecting nicotiana for your containers.

They are available in a range of colors from pure white, to pink, purple, burgundy and lime green.

They can be easily grown from seed. Giving them a head start by planting seed indoors will ensure early blooms for your containers. It attracts night pollinators -hummingbird moths love it, and so do hummingbirds.

Remember that nicotiana is poisonous to pets and children.

Nicotiana does well in full to part sun, a rich potting mix, and regular fertilizing with a balanced formula. Deadhead spent flowers for continual bloom.

You can save nicotiana seed by allowing seed pods to form towards the end of the gardening season. Be aware that seed collected from hybrid varieties might not come true to the parent plant.

They are somewhat prone to insect problems and they can develop fungal diseases in humid weather. Treat as needed.Want more? Use the arrows below to see more lovely container garden designs, all with identified plants and care advice.
