A space-age container garden look! Or is it a flashback to those 1970s egg-shaped hanging chairs?

Succulents find a home in a contemporary-looking clear container.

The placement of a few rocks among the plants lends a natural look and anchors the succulents.

In the back of this succulent combination we find Euphorbia tirucalli (firestick cactus, pencil cactus).

It's a showy plant, but when broken, it produces a milky sap that causes allergic reactions and if ingested, can be deadly. Contact with the outer part of the plant is safe.

Sedum morganianum's long stems covered in green-blue leaves trail down. It's a fragile succulent, so don’t move it once planted in place.

Another type of sedum is planted next to it. Sedum aldolphii's small rosettes of golden leaves, tinged with red provides contrast both in shape and color. Two bluish-green rosette-forming succulents complete this container combination: echeveria and semprevivum.

Use a potting mix specific for cacti/succulents, provide proper drainage and add a layer of coarse sand or grit to the surface of the soil to avoid rot. Allow the soil to dry between waterings.

Full sun or bright light is needed to keep your succulents happy. You can apply cactus fertilizer during summer.Want more? Use the arrows below to see more lovely container garden designs, all with identified plants and care advice.
